People buy new cars and used cars. Some people are interested in classic cars or muscle cars that often need to be fixed up or restored. Then there are those who purchase cars from auto salvage dealers. A salvage car is an automobile that is considered a total loss as a vehicle because of its circumstance or the condition of the car. Loss due to circumstance generally involves cars that have been abandoned or impounded for too long. Cars that have been considered a loss due to condition may be antiquated cars that have not been run in a while, cars involved in a wreck, or cars that have been through a flood.

Cars that have been considered a salvage vehicle are often times sold to a junk car dealer. The junk car dealer has a couple of options for this salvage car. The first involves dismantling the car and selling the parts in a salvage yard, or junk yard. Often times, the process of taking a car apart and selling the parts can generate a great deal more money than if the dealer offered the junk cars for sale. The high cost of parts to repair cars keeps this business alive and extremely profitable as salvage dealers acquire the cars for cheap prices.

The other option is to offer the acquired salvage cars for sale outright. Salvage auto sales are not meant for the average consumer looking to buy a car. Generally, these salvage vehicles need quite a bit of work, and quite a few parts, in order to get them into running condition. The customer that the salvage car dealer caters to is one who is mechanically inclined and is looking for a project car to work on. People who undertake this type of hobby have the knowledge, and the tools, to take a salvage vehicle that is unable to run, and restore it into a working, safe, automobile.

Although many classic car and muscle car enthusiasts also undertake a great deal of restoration and mechanical work to bring their vehicles back to life, there is a considerable difference. Generally, salvage cars do not fall into the category of classic or muscle cars. Salvage dealers know that these cars, even if they require a great deal of work, will bring them a higher price with than will a typical car. Repairable car dealers who are lucky enough to come across a classic automobile generally clean them up as much as they can and advertise them to the right markets. These cars do not usually sit in the salvage lot to rust away.

The price of salvage vehicles depend on the condition of the car. Cars that have been taken to salvage due to abandonment will cost more than a car whose side has been wrinkled in a collision. Cars in which the motor does not function at all will be sold much cheaper than one whose motor has some spark of life.

Most salvage car dealers can be found in the local phone book under salvage yards. Searching the Internet is another way someone looking for a weekend project can find the right place to buy a salvage automobile.
