Specialty cars have quite a bit of discussion surrounding what exactly makes a car one of the specialty vehicles out on the road. To most people, auto specialties are synonymous with exotic cars. An exotic car is one that is sought after due to its style or performance. Specialty, or exotic cars, have appeared in movies, music videos, and posters symbolizing wealth and power. Typically, when the specialty automotive class is equated to exotic cars, the following manufacturers come to mind; Ferrari, Lamborghini, Mc Laren, Lotus, Maserati, Bugatti, Aston Martin, and Saleen. There are high end Porches, Jaguars, and Mercedes Benz vehicles that can be considered exotic cars, although as a manufacturer not all of their vehicles qualify. Others consider the Dodge Viper, the 2004 Chrysler ME four twelve, and the 2005 Ford GT to be included in this class as well as its high powered engine, and high performance is mixed with the style of many specialty autos.

Another school of thought is that any high performance car can be considered a specialty auto, not just the exotic, hard to find import vehicles. Under this classification, the classic American cars, and the American muscle cars are considered to be specialty automobiles. Often times, the older model Chevy Corvettes are considered to be not only classics, but specialty cars. However, with the advent of technology, many of the later year models of some classic cars are thought to be specialty cars. The newer Chevy Corvettes and Ford Shelby Mustangs have met the stylistic and performance criteria that many expect from a specialty automotive.

Specialty auto sales generally come from individual collectors and owners as the market for these cars is very small due to their extremely high pricing. The individual who is selling a specialty automobile can usually be found at specialty car shows, exotic car shows, or through the various networking channels established in exotic and specialty car clubs. At times, there are specialty autos listed for sale on the Internet by individuals, however these type of listings often bring too many unqualified solicitations for purchase so they are avoided.

Another method of purchasing an exotic car is to look for specialty auto sales dealerships in your local area. These are often listed in the local phone book under auto dealers. They may not have the name specialty in the title but they can be distinguished by the types of cars they sell. Many of the classic car dealerships have specialty cars in their inventory, or they can be helpful in locating one.

For the purchase of a new specialty automobile, it is often necessary to go through an importer. Notice that the catalog of manufacturers is mostly Italian and there are few dealerships outside of the large cities that sell these cars. Searching the phone book or the Internet for auto importers can help find someone who can bring one of these cars to you.

Other specialty cars can be bought through the dealerships that are local. Chevrolet, Porsche, Ford, Chrysler/Dodge, and Mercedes Benz are common to most areas. Their line of specialty vehicles can be ordered and customized through any number of their existing dealerships nationwide.
